Monitor resolution and font size

in General Discussion edited January 2014
I have always had my 17 inch monitor on 832x624 resolution but I decided to see if I could live with 1024x768 since if i want to buy an LCD moniotr thats what they look best on.

I changed the resolution and the font size was too small, so I made them bigger in the control panel(I am using OS9). Thats fine. The problem is with web browsing-no matter that I changed my AOL preferences AND IE preferences to make the font size bigger, they will not get bigger in my web pages. What am I doing wrong? I find the type size just way too small for comfort(and I set the size to 16!). Please help, thank you............................... .....................

I don't know how to help you but I have a question... why 800x600 on a 17" monitor? That's HUGE.

Actually I just checked. Its 832x624. I kept it like that because the type size is too small on 1024. Thn I figured there must be a way to increase that because not everyone has superman eyes. The type right now on my browser is tiny.......................

I noticed the font size on Internet Explorer is smaller on some pages than Netscape. You could try to change browsers.

But its fine when my monitor is at 832x634. I also increased the font size in preferences, shouldn't that increase to font size in browser windows?..................

Browsers use their own font sizes.

In Netscape (OS 9) it is Preferences->Appearance->Fonts

In iCab (OS 9) it is Preferences->Browser->Fonts/Language

Don't have IE or OSX so can't help you there, but it will probably be similar.

I think you need to get your eyes checked. Seriously. It was reading text on a computer screen where I first noticed problems before I realized I had become nearsighted. Or you could just have a really bad monitor. What's the refresh rate?

The refresh rate is 75 hzh, but its the type size thats the problem. Its no problem at all at the old resolution I had it at.

My vision is 15/20 so thats not the problem-I just find it less of a strain to read a decent size font. Maybe I'll have to go back to 832x634 and forget about getting an LCD...............................

A decent size font is understandable, but 1024x768 on a 17" monitor's huge... I can't imagine any bigger.

Doesn't the type size get smaller as you increase the resolution? The window holds more info but the type size gets small. That is the problem.........................

Yeah I understand that. That's why I'm shocked that you said your vision isn't bad.

I would say the font size is 10. I prefer 12, which is about what it was at the old resolution. It just looks too small to me,I can read it I just find it more comfortable and less of an eye strain at a larger size. Now I'm looking at 17 inch LCDs and some are saying optimal resolution is 1280. Yikes. .................................................

Most of the alternative browsers, Chimera and Mozilla for certain, allow you to set a minimum font size as well as a default size and font for more readability (different fonts can have major impact at small pixel sizes).

IE's font preference handling sucks, it won't change sizes specified in pixels which many sites use for various reasons.

You might also want to consider Mac OS X's built in accessability features for zooming into screens.

Ahhh, thank you. So there is no way for IE to change the font size of web pages even though I increased the size in preferences. I notice it only increased the size in my emails.

What about Safari? I can't use OSX but when i buy a new computer I had wanted to use Safari rather than IE. Will Safari do what chimera and mozilla can with the font sizes?......................................

Safari should be fine, it's becoming a standard feature in browsers.

The only thing that might be missing is a minimum font size pref as Safari's preferences are a bit sparse at the moment.

OK, I reset my resolution back to 832. I'll keep it there until I buy a new computer that runs OSX and use safari. Thanks....................................

I have a 17" as well and till about 2 years ago I too had it set at 832x624. After reading your post I set it at 832x624 just to remember... Hughhhhhhh, how did I ever stand those large pixels in my face? If I remember correctly I did have to get use to the smaller fonts, but the picture quality is soooooo much better at 1024x768. Here's a <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/stormyjohn/1024x768.JPG"; target="_blank">screen shot of my monitor set at 1024x768. At the top is AOL and the bottom is IE. I never use AOL to browse the Internet with hence never noticed how much smaller the fonts are when compared to IE. I now remember that I did increase the font size in IE.

The funny thing is I increased the font size in IE, which I use on a few web sites that don't like AOL, and the font size just did not get any bigger. I am surprised you don't have this problem. Oh well, what can I do?.............................

Well, let's get this baby working

Do this: See the top bar on IE, the one that has the Back, Forward, Stop, Refresh and so on icons? Ok, Control click on that section and select "Customize." This will bring up a window with Icons. Find the ones that say "Larger" and "Smaller." Drag them to the icon bar at the top of IE.

There you go, now you can change the font size on the fly.

Wow, very cool! I wonder why microsoft keeps this a secret? Too bad it doesn't set the font higher permanently, but this is a good workaround, thanks...........................
