new ext. harddrive question

got my 80G harddrive,

my imac FP detected it right away, and asked me to initialize it,

i choose the HFS+ format and 2 partitions

and then it took less than 30 secs to complete,

i cant believe it and i copy a few G of stuff to the new drive and it worked.

my question is: initialization a new drive takes less than 30 sec?

    "Low-level" formatting (the kind that takes hours) is done at the factory. What you are doing is "initializing" and "partitioning" which basically amounts to writing a new directory.
