Entourage >>>> Mail : Convince Me To Switch

I use Entourage right now and enjoy the customization options that it allows. I am intrigued about using Apple's built-in Address Book and all the other iApps, but don't think that Mail is "there" yet.

Anybody here make this switch? Did you STAY with Mail or come back to Entourage?

Thanks!

I tried to switch to mail, but failed. Entourage is just so much better.

Entourage has a better interface, more colourful, more customisation and allow u to classify by categories.

And there are address book functions, task functions and calenders integrated into Entourage too! Entourage is a great program!

I've been using mail since jag. I love it. It's a little pokey switching between mailboxes, but not too bad. The junk mail filter is spectular. Fabulous. Awesome. The Best Thing to happen to email since email. There's no way I could go back to entourage.

Entourage is slow and bloated. I'm glad I switched.

?Um... excuse me. Entourage switches between mailboxes instantly. How could it possibly be slower than Mail? there's not a thing about Entourage that I find "slow". And I'm using a 400 MHz machine.

Entourage is slow to load. It's slow to search. Slow to resize.

Of course, since you doubt my assessment of entourage's speed, why don't you doubt my assessment of mail's speed and give it a chance? It's well worth it.

Wow, to think, I was just going to start a thread on this.

I'm on a 400mhz G4, switched to 10.2 a couple of months ago. When I loaded Jaguar and attempted to switch to Mail. It didn't take and I continued with Entourage (after about ten minutes!)

I got tired of having to boot up Classic every day just for Entourage, so I made the switch five days ago.

I backed up all my messages and contacts, commended my soul to the Lord and selected import from the File menu.

The import take awhile, so be patient (then again I work at a publishing house so my messages have a lot of graphic-intensive attachments.) When the import is complete, all your messages are marked unread, so it took about ten minutes to select the various mailboxes and select "mark as read" from the Message menu.

    What I like:

Cocoa app, very clean interface, easy learning curve (from Entourage), fairly customizable, Inbox can show which of my three email addresses the messages have come from, no cost.

    What I dislike:

Upon opening, there is a quick burst of activity I'm not clear on (I think it's related to checking .mac and/or checking the database, but I'm not sure) It's just a bit unsettling for a newbie to the program.

Also, like my Entourage setup, I have the original message quoted at the bottom of my replies. Unfortunately, when I choose a signature, Mail puts it right at the bottom (of the quote) instead of at the end of my message. This is really dumb. I have to cut and paste the sig to where I need it. I haven't found a preference setting to change this behaviour and it gets really annoying.

My last beef is that Mail places your attachment icons in the message itself, as opposed to keeping it separate as Entourage does. I think keeping them separate is the better way to go.

Oh, and Mail identifies new unread messages by putting an Aqua-colored bullet in front of them. I liked the Entourage method of bolding them so they stood out more. Though I must confess, I had dozens of messages in my inbox and I'm down to ten now, since I tend to look at everyhing in my Inbox as needing to be dealt wih now. So maybe it's not a bad thing.

While I spent a lot more type on dislikes than likes, please understand that I do like this program and there's nothing above that can't be fixed with a simple tweak. To my knowledge, there are no major showstoppers in the program, and unless you work in a Windows shop where you will need the upcoming Exchange component, I can't see any real reason not to switch to Mail.

I haven't tried this personally, but <a href="http://versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=18189&db=mac"; target="_blank">httpmail is supposedly a plugin for mail that can do hotmail. If the junkmail filter works for hotmail accounts using this plugin, I might actually have to get a hotmail account.

The thing about no Hotmail was discouraging for me also, but I'll have to try that plugin since Entourage DOES tend to be a bit long in the tooth as far as speed goes.

It was the junk mail filter that got me to switch. A godsend - seves me ten mintes a day!

I use Entourage, played with Mail, but will never switch.

Entourage keeps all the PIM functions in one application, and as such, it is very, very, very, very easy to work with all of that data. it's just so well integrated.

I wouldn't want to switch between multiple apps to do half the things Entourage does. But hey, it's all about preference.

Mail is free, Entourage isn't. You get what you pay for.

Entourage has a very effective junk filter too.

When was the last time I had junk mail in my inbox...hmm...sometime back in November.

I really doubt Entourage's Junk filtering is as effective as Mail's...does it even learn on the fly?
  • Reply 11 of 17
I actually wrote my own junk mail filter for Entourage. It doesn't "learn" on the fly per se, but it takes me about two seconds to update it for new "threats".

I switched to Mail about a week ago, and I love it. Mail is Snappier? and it's faster than Entourage overall, the first thing i noticed was how much faster I recieved my mail.

I'm now totally MS-free (except for Word that I have to use for school related stuff).

Unless you need som Entourage specific features there is no reason not to switch.
