802.1x, Airport, and the "Odyssey"

OK Airport is cool. U. Rhode Island however.. they're adding wireless to the library but you need a "user name and password." I said ok how do I get one? They looked at my Apple and gave me a list of "acceptable systems"... It was only Windoze.. Huh? Apparently they're using this authentication system called "Odyssey." From "Funk Software." Odd, since I'm typing this on an open WiFi network in the Fogerty building plus the computer store in the Union building is also open.

Also they mentioned they were using 802.1x. I read about M$ developing this new "standard", a perversion of 802.11.b with "Microsoft security" added. I just want to connect in the library. I'm meeting with the network people Thursday. What should I say?

I found this from Google:

[quote] Any 802.1x compatible wireless card including:

Â*

Cisco Aironet

Apple Airport

Orinoco PC-Card<hr></blockquote>

from here: <a href="http://www.open.com.au/radiator/technical.html"; target="_blank">http://www.open.com.au/radiator/technical.html</a>;

So it would appear that is possible? Perhaps it's this Odyssey stuff they've installed?

Even so would Virtual PC gain access?

    Started to do a little searching, this article might help a little in understanding it

    <a href="http://www.nwfusion.com/research/2002/0506ilabwlan.html"; target="_blank">http://www.nwfusion.com/research/2002/0506ilabwlan.html</a>;

    Also, this article:

    <a href="http://www.networkcomputing.com/1311/1311sp2.html"; target="_blank">http://www.networkcomputing.com/1311/1311sp2.html</a>;

    Specifically from that article:

    Protocol, NIC Support

    The Odyssey server supports Windows XP TLS (Transport Layer Security), Cisco LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol) and TTLS (Tunneled TLS), an IETF draft standard developed by Funk and Certicom making its way through the PPP Extensions working group.

    Since the airport card supports Cico LEAP, I'd assume there should be some way to get it to work. Of course, I'm not a networking person... so someone can feel forward to step up and take this.

    Heh, another note, digged up from MacCentral:

    <a href="http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0207/09.authentication.php"; target="_blank">http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0207/09.authentication.php</a>;

    It looks like the MeetingHouse software should work, though it costs $40. There's a beta version on their site that supports a bunch of protocols, that's a free trial version for 30 days if you want to try it out.

    There is a Cisco VPN client for OS X that might allow you to log into the network. I haven't used it, but that might get you started.

    The Cisco VPN client is what we use here at UCLA for authentication.

    The Cisco VPC client sounds cool, and it has the Cisco name behind it so that might convince the Windoids.

    How the heck do you download the Cisco VPC Client though? On the Versiontracker.com link it asks for a password! Is it commercial?

    Your college is supposed to license it from Cisco I believe, and then if they use it they provide a way for you to download the client. Check your PM.

    Apparently they're using "TTSL." No VPN apps mention this. SO I guess the Cisco VPN Client won't work since URI isn't using LEAP it's using some dumb standard. Meeting House is supposed work but we have this "configuration" file used by "odyssey" to allow authentication. However we couldn't convert it and get it to work! Anyway this other guy here knows the Meeting House people and is in touch and I'll keep everyone updated, I expect it might take a month since OS X just isn't on their priority list. This so retarded, since many other buildings have completely open 802.11b! Also the library might add 802.11g, since the access points have upgradeable modules.
