The Wall Street Journal will stick with Apple News for the foreseeable future since it attracts a "genuinely different audience" for the publication.

The legacy newspaper was one of the first official partners for the Apple New+ subscription service. And it signed on amid rejections from similar major publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Robert Thomson, CEO of WSJ parent company News Corp., signaled that the outlet will continue its partnership with Apple News during the company's latest earnings call, the New York Post reported.

"That Apple News partnership allows us to focus on that tier of content and bring in a significantly new audience that we would hope to graduate to a paid WSJ subscription over time," Thomson said. "And it is a genuinely different audience. It's actually, of late, more women than men. For The Wall Street Journal itself, it's more men than women."

The Journal's plan to stick with Apple News comes about a month after The New York Times withdrew from the platform entirely, citing taking a different strategy to engage with readers.

Back in March 2019, New York Times CEO Mark Thompson said that publications should avoid Apple News -- comparing the service to a "Netflix" for journalism. The NYT CEO said that publications should be cautious because of lost subscriber revenue and giving Apple too much power in the news industry.

On Tuesday, a report indicated that a new feature in iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur could allow users to bypass publication websites entirely when clicking on story links from Apple News+ publishers.

As for the WSJ, Thomson added that News Corp. is in talks with other online content distribution platforms beyond Facebook and Apple.

Apple in July announced new local-focused and audio for its Apple News and Apple News+ platforms.

In April, the Cupertino tech giant said that Apple News had 125 million monthly active users, though some analysts have been concerned than the platform's premium News+ subscription may be off to a slower start than expected.

I think there is mistake in the above sentence.

Remember when analysts were cheering how well publishers were doing on Facebook right up to the point that Facebook admitted it provided false data to the publications to make participation in Facebook’s news effort?

I have no idea what you are on about, I was darn impressed at their skills when I first heard that The Wall Street Journal "signed on amid rejections [...] like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal."

Ah, so the WSJ was simultaneously an early adulator and early detractor of Apple News+. No confusion there! /s

I wouldn't give Apple a trophy yet. They should be absolutely dominating this space like iTunes did. They really aren't trying hard enough.

Things I'd work on if I was at Apple:

    1. The world's first non-biased news network. People say it's impossible but all reporters need to do is STFU and just give us the news. No opinions. If that can't work they can get Democrats, Republicans and independents as reporters in separate segments. If they cause drama between each other, BETTER FOR APPLE as more people will tune in.

The industry is parched for a news network that isn't the dying news networks of the 90s but isn't the new "hip" YouTubers who are highly biased and unprofessional.

    2. Publish exclusive articles from Apple. This could be exclusive tech articles about what Apple is working on, interviews and non tech news from their own journalists. Could include science and education as well a niche lacking in the world of news.

    3. Fix the damn App!!!
The reason I stopped using the app was because the content was not self-contained. Many stories kicked me out of the article and sent me to the damn Safari web browser article!! WHY THE FU** would I use the app when I could just use the web!? Drives me nuts.
Note: Unless this was fixed. Haven't used the app since I encountered this irritant.

And possibly 4. Allow iPhone users to become social-media journalists. Anyone can upload videos reporting events etc. For example if there is a political riot, people can report from the site and add to the news. Every time someone watches the journalists video they get paid a fraction of a penny or something. The best journalists can receive credibility through user votes. A button like "informative" and "not informative" can help the journalist reach the top of results. Any topic can be reported. For example say you're the owner of a startup. You can report the struggles and interviews of your employees outlining the ambitions and obstacles a startup faces. So when a user searches "startup" your video will show up. This can also create a news social network in time. Could tie in to #1 as "Apple News Network" could reference user videos. Could be game changing.

The WSJ is the only reason I subscribe to AppleNews+.
Essentially, it is like subscribing to cable:   paying for a thousand channels of junk to get the one you want.
