Apple in iOS 14 introduced a new feature that allows users to set third-party email and browser apps as default alternatives to Mail and Safari. Although Apple built in compatibility at the system level, individual app makers must add support on their end to take advantage of the feature.

Google in a tweet said that default email support is now live for Gmail on the latest iPhone and iPad operating system update.

Users can change their default mail apps in Settings by heading to the client of their choice and selecting "Default Mail App." A similar process can be done for browsers.

Gmail is only the latest app to introduce support for the new iOS 14 feature. Microsoft's Outlook can already be selected as the default mail client, as can Basecamp-created email service Hey.

Apple released iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 16. According to app analytics data, about 26% of users have adopted the software update thus far.

That should make switching to/back to Android easier.
I used to set up logins on my Mac for guests when they came to stay for a few weeks/months. Every last one of them downloaded the Mac versions of their usual Windows software (even MSN Messenger) and complained at the inevitably crap experience ridiculing the platform. Re-educating them was time-consuming and painful.
Apple never pretended to have an open,  hardware & application agnostic platform so this move is just dumb.
