Adding Custom Alert Sounds in X.

Hello everyone,

Yes I think it is time for yet another question in the realm of ignorance and insanity....

Here goes:

I would like to know if it is possible to add your own custom sounds into OSX.

I noticed you cannot add sounds to the folder where the other "alert" sounds reside.

If this is possible, please (in detail) explain what format, where to put them, etc.

Any constructive help is very much appreciated!

thanks!

put them in ~/Library/Sounds/ where ~ is your home folder.

Sounds can be almost anything I believe. You just have to try. .wav and .aiff should work tough.

And just so if anyone else has this problem, the files also have to be .aif format as well. No other format seemed to work.

IIRC, old system sounds will work if you extract them with resedit or similar tool

and note that the global /Library/Sounds should enable those sounds for all users, ~/Library/Sounds should limit them to a single user
