imac boots into darwin

My room mate's iMac boots into the gui then goes directly to the darwin cli. Ive tried booting into single user mode and running fsck. Every time i run fsck it says

** Root File System

** Checking HFS Plus Volume

** Checking Extents Overflow

** Checking Catalog File

Invalid Key Length

(4, 11450)



please tell me how to fix this shiznit.

Do you have a OS 9 install CD? If so, you can boot off it and reset the startup disc to OS X, that may work.
