EU forming new 'Defense Pact': indicates my feelings of real reason for war correct

Belgium France and Germany announced they are forming a new unified "defense pact" and force

This tells me that some of what I thought underlie the rift between France/Germany and the US/Briton

also: the possible motivation form the alienating diplomacy on the part of the US, namely that they intended to enter Iraq without the rest of the EU in order to claim it as theirs and thereby maintaining power seperate from the ascendant EU

Its as if the strategies in taking shape in the Mid-East on the part of Britain and the US are in part an attempt to mobilize resources and shape future power centers AGAINST the emerging EU. As if this whole thing is about Anglo versus the Continent, the US and England gauranteeing posiion and oil, taking them from France and the EU.

Just a far-fetched paranoid thought . . . . .\

oops, here is a link linkOrama

I guess you missed the Germany and Belgium part? Interesting suggestion and not all that far-fetched.

but it does bring to mind the "Axis of Not-So-Evil" piece... at one point attributed to John Cleese

The EU will hardly be ascending or emerging militarily even with tighter Franco-German military integration. The reality is that their populations have no interest in sacrificing their social welfare programs, which would be necessary to secure the funds to even start to put up any challenge. Beyond that they both are over the EU debt limit of late and they would start out replacing 70,000 American forces in Germany as it stands. It is just not gonna happen.

This just more political posturing, which is hardly surprising. Whatever, Chiraq and Schroeder have better things to worry about. Schroeder is in trouble politically and wouldn't have been re-elected had he not a firm anti-war stance with an anti-American twist. And Chiraq wasn't doing so hot himself until protests votes handed him a gift opponent to save his ass in elections. Their economy will stay weak for decades because no politician has the balls to tackle their massive welfarm system and bloated beaurocracy. In a year once Iraq is fading from the news these two will be in trouble. Ironically, the domestic political and economic troubles that will overshadow their popular war stances on the home front may mirror what happens with their good buddy the Shrubbery. Belgium- not a player, never will be.

Now, maybe in 25 years if things are going well in Russia then they could join together and form a formidable military alliance with Western Europe. Or maybe China will take over the world in 50 years. Who knows? But that's way down the line. For the next decade the EU can strengthen itself perhaps but not by trying to become a military counterweight.

It's not a question of balls : it's impossible to change the system bluntly. Any politician who have tried to change it bluntly have failed. The only way, is to change it patiently years after years, without hurting people too much.

True, it will not become a military counterweight of US, but she can strengthen herself in order to do not look like a joke.
