Firewire Drive :: Need Help

Was wondering ...

I just plugged in my hard drive [firewire enclosure with 3.5" hd] into the firewire port [powerbook 667 dvi]...

there's a message saying

"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."

This drive contains my Mac OS X setup from my Cube. [contains the OS, and all of my documents/apps]

Questions ::::

Would "initializing" it, format the drive?

Is the hard drive in the enclosure suppose to be set on master?

Is there a way at least for me to get onto the drive to pull out my documents/necessary items?

Thanks for any help!

Initializing will erase all the data on the drive.

Try running Disk Utility and see if you can repair it with that. Or, if you have AppleCare, you can run the TechTool that came on the disk.

Don't initialize it yet... there's still hope for the data on the disk

Tried with slave & no jumpers, still doesn't work.

It also mentions to run Disk utility.

when I run VERIFY DISK it says ...

    Verifying disk "primary".

    Checking HFS Plus volume.

    Checking Extents Overflow file.

    Checking Catalog file.

Incorrect block count for file system.log

(It should be 53 instead of 54)

    Invalid BSD file type

    Invalid extent entry

The volume primary needs to be repaired.

    Verify completed.

When I do REPAIR DISK it says ....

    Repairing disk "primary".

    Checking HFS Plus volume.

    Checking Extents Overflow file.

    Checking Catalog file.

Incorrect block count for file system.log

(It should be 53 instead of 54)

    Invalid BSD file type

    Invalid extent entry

    Repair completed.

    Well, does it work now?

You might try repairing permissions too. It seems to fix a lot of random problems.

It might also be that the FW enclosure isn't working properly... See if the HD is inserted properly.

OS X native DiskWarrior is coming out soon...but not here yet.

What OS is on your hard disk? OS 9? And was the disk formatted in something other than HFS+? I don't think I have the knowledge to help, but I'm just tossing some ideas out there...

You said the enclosure works with another HD, what was on THAT HD, and what format was it in?
