No Input sound?

So plugged a cd player into my iMacs (new 17" model) audio input but i hear nothing. Looking at the system prefrances screen the meter for the input is showing sound but I still hear nothing. Any help would be great.

    The audio in doesn't playthrough to the audio out (speakers) normally. You have to be using an audio program that is, say, recording audio from that source to hear it.



    Can you imagine the chaotic feedback you'd get with a microphone if playthrough was enabled?
