File Server Help

Can anyone point me in the direction of good directions on how to make a dedicated file server that works with Mac and PC? Do you just buy a server and then store files on it or is there something else that you do? I would like the drive to be a raid server with about 200 gb storage. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    I would also like to know how to map a network drive on a Mac. Is it just using ctrl-K and having to load it everytime you want to use it or can you just do it once in a program or system preferences?
