Weird Symbols

Why can't I use a symbol like the degree symbol(opt-k) on AI? I know it must have something to do with vB, but is there any way to use those symbols?

°? IC... use opt-shift-8 as a workaround...

The problem isn't vB -- the problem is Safari.
