This is totally asweome. Hope it comes out soon with some Xserver processor upgrades. Hope the PowerMac jump to 1.4Ghz or 1.5Ghz.

Already seen 'em, and is this really Future Hardware?

I have always operated under the assumption that that which had not yet happened was said to "in the future."

    And it certainly is hardware.

I did debate whether it was better off in Current Hardware, but, since you can't actually buy them yet, and there's nothing to speak of on the Apple site, Future it is.

Just trying to help out anyone who hasn't seen them yet.

This is Future hardware. Note the posting guidelines, bradbower: [quote]The Current Hardware forum [...] should be used to discuss performance (benchmarks), pricing, and comparison of hardware that is currently shipping.

That said, the XServe RAID looks yummy!

    Aaah, more blinking lights... mmmm.

Brad, go play traffic cop in your own forums.

Yes, this is future hardware, but I sure wish they were available.

BTW, the site seems to not be responding.

Yeah, I would just love to see Apple add CPU usage lights to the G4 towers. Mmmm....

Anyhow, in case that site goes down again, I've mirrored the big image on my server:

I don't intend to cause a fight here, but I think that's stupid semantics, and if the rule was really meant to be construed in that fashion then it doesn't make much sense.

The Xserve has been shipping for months, as long as the Xserve with RAID has been announced. Pictures have been out for weeks, knowledge is common. They've been announced for a long time, they've been presented before, they're in production (the Xserve line, for months, again), and if you really want to get technical I doubt that any one of us can say with any amount of sureness that Apple hasn't began selling and distributing these to some of their higher-profile clients who want to get their hands on new Apple hardware immediately.

All of that aside, why should it be in a forum meant for discussing possible product ideas, products for the future, and/or products still in development, that there are pictures to a product that is common knowledge, has been announced for months, is in production, and has had pictures leaked for quite a while now?

A good point was brought up about how Apple's site doesn't reflect the the Xserve RAID version just yet, and a curious one at that... probably reason enough for the thread to be here, as if it's any big deal anyway.

Now, back on topic ( ), why is there nothing on Apple's PR page about this showing, no official product page, no mention hardly anywhere? Still not ready? Eek!

Just a sec, is the Xserve RAID an Xserve with stacks of hard drives, or is it "just" a stack of hard drives with a RAID controller and no server capability?
  • Reply 13 of 29
It is just a stack of harddrives, which will be very very easy to hook into the Xserve, and they'll just show up as 14 HDs, all ready to RAID up however you wish.

I *promise* that Apple won't let this out the door until they have RAID 0, 1, 1+0, 5, 5.1 all ready.

(note the surround sound joke--he he.)

IOW--it's the RAID controller/software setup that has needed tweekin', along with time to get the Xserve out and have the early aopter masses (like me) work out any kinks in the hardware, that's causing them to hold the RAID back--it's ready though.

Thanks for that. Definitely this is a product that Apple can't afford to unleash on the market until it's bombproof: imagine the howls of uproar if, say a couple of TB of data go missing...

A cookie to Overhope, BerberCarpet, and bradbower, who know the names of Apple's rackmount products.

    To the rest of you:

Back around the original 'Xserve' announcement, the claim was 'RAID 0,1,3,5,10,30,50... or more.'

2 fibrechannel conduits each hooked to seven drives.

There's been some confusion about whether there's a CPU in the box... I think there is, but it is a dedicated RAID controller really.

I'd guess it's at least as deep as an Xserve (gotta fill that rackspace!), so there's obviously more than enough space for not only a huge power supply and some big noisy fans, but probably even the Xserve motherboard. Though that's overkill for a RAID controller, surely?

    Heheheh...

The power of "Blinking Lights" is strong... In my "Project Studio"... priority one = sound, next... does it have lights...? We love extraneous lights for when we have the control-room lights dim... it just "feels" like the deck of the enterprise. Heheheh...
