Every Linux is CLI under the hood.

every version should include a base install.

ok well I told it to only install the dev tools, among others things and only some of the graphical enviroments, but not KDE and GNOME.

Its just like OS X.. You can boot into CL only.. It does not matter what you install with it.

ok, it sounds like your a neewbie to Linux (which is great actually, it's not a bad thing at all). I think what you are looking for is a "redhat like distro" of linux which doesn't have xfree on there. You first stop is to look for more distro's than Redhat or Mandrake and go to actual linux forums.

To make a long story short, good version of Linux which let you install it yourself (which is not easy I must say) are both slackware and gentoo. I would reccomend gentoo as it's one of the better ones I think. Just don't install xfree or a window manager and you'll have a CLI box. Honnestly tho, if you a newbie to linux then I think a CLI box might be a little too far ahead. They are not the most user friendly boxes around, it's probabaly a better idea to get a light install without all the crap that RedHat has and learn the OS through a GUI first and then try out the CLI.

I learned myself on FreeBSD without a GUI and man, it sucked. I wish I learned with a GUI cause it makes easy operatiosn (like moving files and understanding the file system) actually easy. It's not fun to memorize 30 operations.

    search for knoppix

theres a live cd you can download.

make a vpc hdd image of say 10 mb or so

& give it 256mb ram & the cd will run directly

    in ram

....& you can boot cli or xwin as you please

    have fun...

Why use VPC? Just partition and install gentoo ppc.

Here's a question:: How fast does Knoppix run? I'm downloading it now... Would it run well on my real Compaq 233 MHz PC with 32 MB of RAM?

yes but it will be slow

233mhz is slow & 32mb will be painfully slow if

    you use x

if its just cmd line aka console then it should run fine....

you have slow hardware ...so heres a suggestion

look in the paper for a used machine

    my home server is a p3 500 + 1gb ram

    & its running gentoo 1.2 & oracle 9i for nearly 2 years

now 24x7 & its plenty fast

p3 chips are dirt cheap now & wont break the bank

make sure you have enough ram ...toss in a gf2mx

or similar cheapie card & away you go..

on the plus side if you feel the need to play games

the above will also run win2k quite well for games

Max.. that's all good advice but I'm gonna sooner or later get a brand new machine with Linux preinstalled or I'll install it... I'll keep that in mind though. Thanks.
