freaking

Ok I am not a technophile of any sort, but I love to read the history of technology where I can find it. Does anyone know of a good online resource on the history of phone freaking, hacking and cracking with notable persons and events??? And perhaps the relation this has played in the makeup of current tech standards and corporate philosophies.

    PC at work so slow...

Those sites won't come up here, sez blocked for some reason...

Actually i was just curious as to what tangents this topic would pop up, most threads on AO forum seem to take strange tangents if sustained for long enough...

Well i guess the better way to phrase my thread is what do you guys think about freakin, hacking and cracking???

I know there are probably some UNIX based board that handles such topics but like I said I'm no technophile...

    Oh, you mean phreaking.

Phreaking was less morally objectionable when the telephone industry here was run as a corrupt, ineffective socialist entity. It was also easier. Now it's a bit harder, but it's still possible to make free long distance calls (free for you) if you know what you're doing.

As for hacking and cracking, I support them as long as they don't immorally violate property rights. Lockean property rights and the 10 commandments are the only moral codes that I respect fully. Since they basically overlap in many areas, that makes it even easier to tell right from wrong.

Phone phreaking is generally not possible anymore, as switch signaling is no longer performed on the same line that voice traffic travels on.

I read a really interesting article (possibly from Wired?) about phreaking a year or so ago...I'll see if I can find it online somewhere.

In the meantime, run some google searches on 2600 hz and Cap'n Crunch...and if the sites are blocked from your workplace (or whatever) check the google cache...

Couldn't find that article - but there's a good entry on Wikipedia:

Twenty years of video archives of PBS' Computer Chronicles. I hope you have a fat pipe because some of these episodes from the inchoate years of the computer revolution are over 1GB in size.

Ya, is'nt it phreaking? Steve Jobs used to do that with his blue box he and Woz made in college. Iv'e done a little with the beige box and red box, but I don't want to get in any trouble. So, I don't do that anymore. There seemed to be a cool book at the bookstore I saw once--I'll see if I can get the title and author.

i think woz was more of a phreak than jobs. pretty sure that woz created it on his own, and that jobs acted more as a marketer and salesman.

a bunch of years back, when i first got into computers i tried making a couple of crazy boxen. i wanted to make a black box and take out nyc, just for shits. never got around to doing it though.
