Wireless Printing

I have an iBook (airport equipped), an airport base station, a localtalk to serial adapter (AsanteTalk), and a HP LaserJet 4m. When ever I try and print from any application I get the spinning color wheel for about five min. Then it brings up the print dialogue and allows me to print. Any ideas on why it takes so long to bring up the print dialogue (I also use that to save as PDF and that gets annoying). I think it is software based, but am I wrong? Thanks for your help.
