importing of artwork data to iPod

I was at first wondering why the iPod imports the arwork data to the iPod. Afterall, it simply takes up space. Then I thought, this would be a great feature in future iPods - the ability to see album covers (in color!) on the iPod. How cool would that be?

Anyway... here's wishing.

I would take up too much space on the drive. That might not mean anything for some people, but others are just barely fitting all their music on 30GB iPods. Plus, color might be more expensive.

I think the iPod imports artwork because iTunes stores the art with the song, not individually(which sucks), so the iPod might not have a choice, until iTunes keeps the artwork as a separate file.

I'm not certain but I think iTunes uses the ID3v2 support for embedded images to store the album art, which would make sense to me since it then travels with the file along with all the other infor like title, artist, etc. As a result the art goes with the file when it gets copied to the iPod.
