iMac won't start from CD, can't find syetm folder

I have had this problem before, but I have always been able to start from the CD. I get the lovely blinking question mark over a folder (indicating it can't find the system software). I am unable to boot from a CD as well.

I'm on my school iMac (G3)/firewire, 500MHZ. The only thing I can think of is perhaps firewire target disk mode to get into the system.

Once again: Unable to disk boot...unable to CD boot!

Help?

If holding down 'C' does not help...

    1. hold down cmd-shift-option-backspace or

    2. reset PRAM with cmd-option-P-R

By backspace I assume you mean "delete"?

So far, no dice. Actually, now I get the Apple Logo (gray on Gray) and no start up activity. The machine just freezes in that state.
