firewire is kaput

The other day the power went out while I was away. I came arived home and restarted my computer and now my firewire ports are not working. I have an ipod and a firewire harddrive. Both work on my laptop but will not work on my Powermac, however when I plug my ipod in it still charges it just wont mount the drive. My powermac is a dual 867 g4 and I am running system 10.2.6. What can I do to fix this problem or are my ports out of commision forever?

    hmm, not sure if the hardware test CD that came with your machine would even be able to detect bad firwire ports. anyone more familiar with OSX able to help him out? this isn't ringing any bells for me.

    It's a long shot but try this. Shut down the computer. Open the case. Find the little button to reset the power manager. Hold it down for at least a slow ten count. Release, close case, start computer.



    When someone accidentally switched off the powerstrip for my G4 tower I had what seemed like a dead machine till we tried that.



    I would also try to reset the PRAM. Hold down command - option - P - R keys while restarting the computer. Keep them down till you hear it restart three times.



    I would also check the HD directory. Lauch Disk Utility and try to repair the drive. While you are at it repair permissions.



    If none of that helps you likely have a hardware problem.

    Kickaha and Amorph couldn't moderate themselves out of a paper bag. Abdicate responsibility and succumb to idiocy. Two years of letting a member make personal attacks against others, then stepping aside when someone won't put up with it. Not only that but go ahead and shut down my posting priviledges but not the one making the attacks. Not even the common decency to abide by their warning (afer three days of absorbing personal attacks with no mods in sight), just shut my posting down and then say it might happen later if a certian line is crossed. Bullshit flag is flying, I won't abide by lying and coddling of liars who go off-site, create accounts differing in a single letter from my handle with the express purpose to decieve and then claim here that I did it. Everyone be warned, kim kap sol is a lying, deceitful poster.



    Now I guess they should have banned me rather than just shut off posting priviledges, because kickaha and Amorph definitely aren't going to like being called to task when they thought they had it all ignored *cough* *cough* I mean under control. Just a couple o' tools.



    Don't worry, as soon as my work resetting my posts is done I'll disappear forever.

    Unfortuantaly, your suggestions did not work. Thank you for your advice. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know but I am afraid that my ports may be lost forever.



    On a side note: If I buy a firewire 800 pci card, will my firewire 400 devices work? I know that 800 is nine pin and 400 is six pin but I am not sure if they are backwards compatible...

    Sorry to hear they didn't revive.



    FW400 plugs into FW800 with an adapter cable.
