Don't know if you played with panther yet, but the whole burning and imaging tools have been moved to a greatly improved Disk Utility. Perhaps this will enable burning / control of any drive no matter how it is connected to the mac.

I haven't played with it yet. Does this imply that iDVD and iPhoto will be able to take advantage of external DVD burners?
Anyone with Panther that can answer this question?
If Apple hasn't opened iDVD to third parties yet, what makes you think they'll do it ever? Face it, they want people to have to buy high-margin SuperDrive Macs. The only way you're going to be able to burn DVDs with an external burner is if you spend $90 on Toast, or $500 on DVD Studio Pro.
