Duron VS Athalon?

Can you briefly describe the diff between the AMD Duron CPU and the Athalon CPU?

Application:

I am building a network game server for the America's Army FPS game. It will be hosting games on a T1 (only 6 to 10 players max). The (Gigabyte brand) mobo I am using has 1 GB PC133 RAM (2 x 512), and a 200 MHz FSB. The PC is running Windoes 2000 Pro. It may run Linux if I don't like the Win-specific tools.

Video card specs are not an issue, as this PC will be a server only, and it will not be playing the game. Most of the serving is done from a command line, text config files, and a simple GUI admin tool. No OpenGL or DirectX code is running. I think...

I have a 1.2 GHz Duron now, but I am wondering if a cheap Athalon CPU will help my server better performance.

Seems to me the main issues are RAM and bandwidth. Right? Will an Athalon help?

QtWhat are the physical differences between the AMD Athlon? and Duron? processors?

AtThe primary difference between the two processors is the amount of level two (L2) cache on each chip. The AMD Athlon? processor has more L2 cache memory than the AMD Duron? processor, giving the AMD Athlon? processor a total of 384KB on-chip cache vs. 192KB for the AMD Duron? processor.

You can also go here and see a comparison table of many different processors including Athlons and Durons.

Since you're running PC133 I don't think that you'll get much more performance simply from upgrading the processor.

In the future, if you have about $250 to play around with, you could easily get an new mobo/DDR RAM/processor setup that'll be substantially better than your current system.

But if my server is intended for only 6 or maybe 8 players, dont you think my server will be OK, considering it is on a T1 line? The drive is a 7200 RPM WD and has a 8 MB cache so maps load fast.

YES!!! A cheap athlon will help!

Does your MoBo support 266 FSB? It will read as 200mhz when you have a duron in the socket but in the bios can you switch it to 266mhz vs 200mhz?? (133mhz vs 100mhz)

If so a really cheap athlon XP is an easy way to BOOST hosting power.

If not then it will make an improvement but go out and spend <$50 for an EL'cheapO MoBo (ECS) and get an athlon XP.

Some people think that the cache is the only difference between the duron and athlon xp but the athlon xp has a better core. This is why it can clock much higher than the duron.

Well, the mobo is a Gigabyte K7 Triton. It has the VIA KM266/KL266 chipset. I dont know much about the mobo, but I do know it will support the Duron and the Athlon. It has a "200/266 FSB" and DDR bus speeds. What does that mean? I thought PC133 was the fastest RAM I could install. Enlighten me!

Are you basically saying pick up a cheap Athlon, max out the PC133 RAM and BAM! I have a better server?

I am confused as to what this mobo can do exactly! Oh, the BIOS is AMI (which is AMD's BIOS, right?)

The ATA 7200 RPM ATA/133 w/ 8 MB caches drive is a good idea right? I mean, I can get one (WD 40 GB) for like $60 at newegg.com

Without saying anything for certain, it sounds like you can stuff even DDR RAM in it. That'd give it another boost.

And yes, an Athlon XP is noticeably more powerful than the Duron processor, and I recommend that you upgrade the CPU cheaply instead of buying more RAM (1GB should be more than sufficient for a small game-server like that), if you're having problems with performance. A 1.533Ghz AthlonXP is very cheap now, and is significantly faster than the Duron you already have.

Edit: Oh, and yes, that harddrive is generally a good idea. Fast, reliable in my experience.

So where can I get the best deal on an Athlon XP Socket A CPU at?

Oh, I did order a drive. I got a 60 GB 7200 rpm Maxtor with 8 MB cache. Its an ATA/133 drive. Only $77!

If possible I'd get the 2800+, in many testings it was faster than the 3000+. The 3200+ is starting to look like Intel prices, Bad AMD
