Sony Clie?

I guess I'm totally out of the loop, but I just saw this for the first time ever today:

Sony Clie

mp3 player, digital camera, wireless slot, little keyboard for text input, etc.

Why, oh why, couldn't Apple have done this?

I'd pay $600 for a cool iPod/digital camera/iCal/Address Book handheld with text entry ability. Wireless capability (AirPort and/or Bluetooth)

If that was in white glossy plastic and did the above, we'd all be creaming our jeans.

It would be a Newton-ish kind of thing (so Fran and others like him would finally hush ), but it would be an iPod (which already rocks and sells wonderfully) AND the one thing people would like to see from Apple: a nice little simple digital camera.

Of course, it goes without saying that it would smoothly and nicely integrate with the iApps (iPhoto, iTunes, iCal in particular), as well as Address Book and so forth.

Sorry to be a dunce...I just had no idea something this neat existed. I'd LOVE to see Ive's take on this sort of device (with that cool screen, it could indeed display color photos and videos...something many people here seem to want in a future iPod).

I think it's awesome-looking!

[BTW, I put this in Future Hardware, figuring it might spur talk of "how would Apple approach this sort of device?"...if it needs to be moved elsewhere, knock yourselves out).

P.S. - Couldn't Apple write a simple little OS of their OWN that had the look and feel of OS X, but was simplified to just deal with appointments, iCal data, iTunes playlist display, etc.?

Is it written in stone somewhere that any and all handhelds have to be based on the whole Palm software thing? I honestly don't know...I'm asking.

It just seems that all I hear is "Palm" this and "Palm" that.

If Apple wrote it to work with THEIR stuff, who cares then?

The point of this would be the ultimate "digital hub" device, MEANT to work with Macs and OS X...so what if Apple wrote their own clean, simple interface/OS for something like this?

I'm not concerned with compatibility...except with other Macs, of course.

Then again, if this thing costs $699 from Sony, I doubt Apple would sell anything of their own making for less than $1000.

You know how that works...

Yeah, the Apple version would not be a penny under $999.00.

But, they could easily better it. It would be worth some premium.

I hate to say this (I'll get dinged heavily), but if Apple did it, you know that a) it would work and b) it would work well with all the other stuff of theirs.

That, in addition to looking REALLY nice...I don't know. $999 probably WOULD be the price. BUT, I'd probably seriously consider it.

    THERE...I said it!

[add up the price of a decent digital camera, an iPod, AirPort card onboard, a color Palm Pilot, etc. and you'd pay roughly that, give or take...and 3-4 gadgets to schlep around and keep up with. I'd rather have it all in one unit and have it so nicely integrated with everything else].

Clie's are my favorite PDA's. I still might buy one but I just don't know if I would really use most of the features.

Sony is the perfect company to make one of these because they damn near manufacture all the parts necessary.

a newer version has already been introduced with built-in bluetooth and 2mpx-camera...(but the thing is a beast!!!):

Its just a shame that none of the Clies work with Mac (out of the box)...you need 3rd party "Missing-Sync" software.

More reason for Apple to make their own, truly wrapping up the whole "digital hub" thing on the hardware end.

I wonder what SJ thinks of the Clie...

Doesn't iSync now support Sony Clies? I checked compatibility on the iSync site and I think ever since version 1.0 released, Sony has been supported. Correct me if I'm wrong, but iSync could be the "Missing Sync."

iSync only does a basic sync with the Clie contacts and scheduling....the Missing-Sync software allows the Clie/memory-sticks to mount as a drive onto your desktop, iTunes, and other neato stuff...

which, by the way, is totaly cool. I have an NR70V, and when i plug it into my mac it launches iphoto and syncs the camera, and can import pictures from iphoto. It also syncs music with iTunes-its so much better than with my PC, which is a mess and cant connect anything properly without a lot of tinkering .

    Go Missing Sync!

Ashman..i am thinking of getting the NX and missing sync...

Do you know if I am allowed to use the same "Missing-Sync" on multiple handhelds? or do I have to buy an extra copy for my wife's clie?

Also, I live in japan so i cannot get a Clie with English on it...is it possible to reinstall with an english OS? (i am guessing that it is possible since the NX and NR has a virtual graffiti area so it must be a software/firmware thing...)

    Please advise

This kind of device would have been the ONE positive contribution (okay, cool running portables is another) of using Motorola "embedded chips" as cpu's. Is there a very cold running G3 hybrid out there?

Then again if the Clie with Missing Synch works well enough....

The machine IMHO to buy now - and I have had one for 6 months - is the CLIE NR70V at greatly reduced prices.

    Amen to that!

Missing Sync is better at what it does than any of the Windoze equivalents. Elegant, cheap, capable.

These guys deserve support, especially as they've just replicated the whole concept so you can now deploy iPaqs and their ilk on Macs as well.

    From the article

[quote] I don't think I need to explain to you what a big advantage having a flash is. It was just on Monday that I told Steve that a built-in camera was an important part of my ideal handheld but, unlike all current ones, it needed a flash.

Like cell batteries don't last long enough as it is, I want to go around snapping pics up and killing my battery making the phone useless until I can get back to my car or home to recharge? That's just stupid. For that, I'd get a real camera. What's the point of having such hi rez and flash when the lens is the size of a life saver? Not to mention flash kills batteries. This convergence thing is going a little over board. I'd rahter have a cute small camera that will take gorgeous pics with a flash and a cool cell phone without the camera so I can talk on the phone about the photos I just took.

I dunno, sounds really stupid IMO.

I'm sure Apple watches Sony quite closely with Steve being a 'fan'.

If Apple do something 'like' this, I'm sure it will be better.

Lots of rumours talked about an iPod like device/tablet.

    No smoke without fire?

After the success of the iPod, I'm sure Apple are planning their next step in consumer gadjet land.
