Useful Knowledge that Should be Common

I'm surprised at the number of people I see asking for help hosting pictures. Some number of these people must be broadband customers - why don't they use OS X's built in Apache server capabilities and host it themselves? Simply enable Web Sharing in Network preferences, drag the picture into /Library/Webserver/Documents and host it as http://(ip address here)/picture.jpg and it's done.

Of course, there are times when this wouldn't be feasible - such as when there would probably be a Lot of traffic to the picture, making it a bandwidth killer, or if an ip address changes every ten minutes. But for forum purposes, it's really the best solution.

I think, though, that this might be just one of many bits of information that a lot of people can't take advantage of simply because they don't know about it. While osxhints provides a pretty comprehensive database of such things, and several books are also helpful, maybe some seasoned X users could post a few tips here about extremely useful but under-acknowledged capabilities of this "next-generation" OS.

OR their ISP doesn't allow hosting in ANY form

My main problem is that I am not always on the computer so the computer isn't always on, and sleeps a lot. I don't see what it matters, most ISP's will give you server space and there are free hosting places anyway.

www.hostultra.com sucks, randomly it will take you to a porn page when you try to access your site

I would host pictures for everyone if I could. I have two 120GB WD HD's being unused in my dell which could be easily formatted to mac. The only catch is my ISP has everything thing blocked on my computer going out. no FTP, http, DNS, no nothing.

A friend of mine hosts his site there. I have yet to get into it, because I can't get past the redirection.
