Finder randomly crashing

Posted:
in Genius Bar edited January 2014
On a G3/266 with an OWC G4 upgrade and radeon PCI, the Finder is crashing all the time. It is running 10.2.6 and seems fine besides that.

Any ideas? Where should I start?

I've worked a bit more on the machine and observed a few things that might serve as clues.

    The finder quits when:

-any file is moved btw directories

-files are moved to the server (windows share)

The Finder also feels very sluggish. The thing is, we have some other Macs which are running fine. Our scanner Mac is and 8600 w/a G4/450 and 10.2.6...this thing rocks!

Any clues on how I might start trouble shooting?

try removing the CPU upgrade, then repeat the steps you have taken in the past to cause a crash. Those machines were very touchy with CPU upgrades.

Have you tried booting the OS X installer CD and running the Disk Utility from there to fix the permissions?

Also, have you tried creating another user account, logging in with that account, and see if the Finder still crashes? Could be a bad user account...

Here's an update. First off, the Finder is still crashing, but I can't say that it is a random occurrence. The finder is crashing after a file is copied to a new directory, moved from a CD, to or from a server, etc.

I have tried two different accounts (haven't made a new one, but I'll try) and the error persists. I have booted from the OSX CD and run Disk Utility (haven't tried perm, but will), I have swapped in the original G3, and finally, down clocked the G4...the error is still there.

Im fresh out of ideas. Anyone?

Everything else is working very well. The problem appears to be isolated to the Finder.

Does this log report mean anything to anyone?

What I would do if I were in your situation is reinstall OS X. Then proceed through the upgrades of 10.1 and 10.2. See if that does anything. Experiment with both versions before upgrading to 10.2 (doing the things that caused your Finder to crash). If your Finder crashes in both versions, I would contact the vendor. If it only crashes in 10.2, stay with one of the previous versions until Panther is released, and try using Panther. I'm betting it will only get worse, however, as you continue to upgrade.

One of the few misfortunes of owning an older machine, I'm afraid. Hope it all gets solved in the near future.
