Food for thought...

I know we've all heard this before, BUT this is something with an interesting twist. I was talking to a friend *cough* in Australia about getting a new iMac. Here the new iMac's have come down alot in price. But then he also said that all the comp's with G4's were going to comedown alot further in price in late March because the "G5's are comming out". I was very curious and asked him what exactly that meant, and he replied "I can't say much as you know, but you might be supprised that I don't know much either. He said I don't know the specifications about what the new mac's will enatil, but said I would probably guess they would appear in the high-end machines first...as anyone would expect. He also noted that they're suppose to come out around late march, but they might be delayed slightly by like a week or so, as they do sometimes.

Now the credability...

Well I was carefully thinking about some of the things he mentioned. I'm not saying they ARE coming out, but suggesting maybe they're closer to deployment than we think.

1) This guy is *cough*.

2) The G4's HAVE come down in price accross the board.

3) The amount of info. he has seems consistent with apple's secracy.

4) His job involves *cough*retail*cough*, and anyone in the retail bussines would know that there's preparation before releasing a new product, and 2 months doesn't seem too early nor late for him to know a very vague description.

5) The fact that he said there'll be price drops on G4's. He also mentioned that although the G4's will be well priced, it would be hard for them to sell because know one will want them- everyone would be after the G5's.

PS. Things get released in Australia a day later than the states... so that's not an issue.

Anyway this was just something to ponder on...

I'm not counting on anything...being let down too many times. Im not to familiar with the keynotes...but is there one around that time?

We'll just have to wait and see what happens!

Any other thoughts...

If your friend is that high up on the food chain then Steve will probably come out to personally put a bullet in his head for divulging such a rumor of an update. Still fairly interesting stuff...

I always think of Steve more in an Al Pacino/Michael Corleone way: He'll go up to the guy and hug him whilst giving an 'enforcer' a look that says "take this guy out fishing!" Of course, because it's Apple, someone will actually take him fishing - but the boat will be 20 knots slower than the boat that Microsoft uses although the Apple boat will look nicer and won't stop every three miles to ask you to register your ownership of the boat and everything on it.

Just for future reference. Try not to give away too much info about your source. No need to mention the country, no need to mention his job details. Just give enough info to make us think you have a source, but protect your source at the same time. How would you feel (if the rumor is true) if your friend was tracked down and fired for leaking this info?

Just try and protect your sources if they are legit.

I don't know. I'm sorta thinking of the chainsaw scene from Scarface. I think that Steve could truly get medieval if he wanted to.

Ya know, on the topic of Scarface I think that last scene where he's got that pile of coke on his desk could be replaced with Steve having a big pile of 970's on his desk just before he gets blown away.

Hey Alex_1800, you gave us too much info. There can't be more than ten people meeting the description you gave. Honest.

People _have_ gotten the boot for less, you really don't want to connect quite so many dots.

Of course, that means all the rumors come out "a friend of a friend of someone with a clue might have said something offhand..." Sigh.

Well, let's analize this (can't wait to Amorph's opinion)

If new towers were to come out in say July or about, Apple would clear channels, possible EOL some. They would want to reduce inventory. Well, let's then say or think about their stance on the current towers if indeed a brand spanking new 970 in a gorgoues brand spaking new aluninum case came out at say 1.6ghz. Would in their right fricking mind would be the G4? So, what do you do? You sell them at a reduced price a month or so leading up to the release of the 970/G5, because the day after, all sales will be for the 970/G5 unless it's too expensive. However, noting recent price cuts, the idea that Apple will reduce the costs of the current models to make way for the 970/G5, I don't think they will be too expensive.

Interesting. Seems to make some sence.

I dunno; late March seems to fit the time when we've all heard the 970 chips were supposed to start rolling off the lines, not the systems themselves. Could your friend have meant that, or possibly misunderstood the intelligence he received? A 970 intro in April seems awfully quick to me, and doesn't jibe with anything we've heard about the 970's likely timetable. Not that I wouldn't love to be wrong.

No 970 powered Macs till 3rd quarter at the earliest. Not a solid fact but an educated opinion based on all available factual information I could gather.

Interesting. Seems to make sense......but it might also be that Apple are just trying to maintain interest in the PM and spin them along on the G4 shoestring for as long as they can possibly squeeze more power out of MOT.

IMHO we won't be seing any 970s this spring. My guess is that when IBM says Q3, then that's when it's bloody well ready.

Unfortunately we are forced to come up with this sort of theories and speculation because we are continuously being let down by Apple. Yesterday's underwhelming iMac update is just the latest example.

Yes, I wouldn't mind one of those newfangled MDD 1.43 GHz dualies. Am I shelling out? . This is where we should have been a year ago.

I hope and pray that Apple comes up with a real WOWer in the autumn and blows everything away again. They have before. Now's the time to do it again. Till then I'm keeping my money and my G3.

Well what i meant and the topic starter meant, wasn't that the 970/G5 was due this spring, but that this spring Apple would reduce prices in preperation for the 970 this fall. So the towers would be kinda cheap for a few months leading up to the 970/G5. A great way to clear all the G4 tower inventory because they won't move once the 970 is out.

Apple claims to have very little inventory so it shouldn't take months for them to clear it out. Also, Apple's style has been to simply stop production and wait for the channel to clear rather than cutting prices. Once they cut prices it is very hard to push them back up again. If you got the market accustomed to $1,500 PMs then came out with a new model for $2,500 that would be a hard sell.

I'm skeptical that anyone outside of a small number of people in Cupertino know anything specific about Apple's plans more than a few weeks ahead of time.
