Bags: Portrait or Landscape, rigid or...?

I'm thinking I need a new bag to set off my new PowerBook. I am partial to messenger-types (I actually do ride my bike a lot), and I have a few nice ones in mind. However, I read something on MacNN to the effect that PowerBooks are known to bend/warp with messenger bags because of the bending stress (two straps bending the 'book across the hip). When riding, I tend to sling the bag across my back, so it's relatively flat. Most of the time, however, it would ride low on my hip, walking about.

I don't know what to think about this. Currently, I have a Pismo and a Kensington "conventional" backpack, so there is no way for me to observe this problem myself. I'm not really psyched about getting a full hard case, as I'd be forced to use a handle or have that rigid mass on my back.

Hopefully I'm not starting a new thread where I could have added on to one.
