Help please! Loginwindow crash

Posted:

I'm not sure what I did that could be causing this and I'm having a little trouble making heads or tails out of my loginwindow crash log. Maybe someone can help me out.

I am able to ssh into my machine and I ran fs_usage to monitor what my computer was doing. It spewed out a whole boatload of stuff and I'll post that too if someone thinks it'll help. Thank goodness I partitioned my harddrive so I can do some work using a different system while I try to figure out what went wrong. Can anyone help? TIA.

I take it you've run fsck, right?

Well, this probably doesn't help much, but the bezel services (as seen in the log) refers to the process that pops up the little translucent box when you hit the volume/brightness/eject key.

Yup. I've done all that I can think of and now I'm doing a search for the line on my computer that's calling for a file I deleted. Massive perl/grep action going on right now. The fs_usage turned out some interesting things, none of which make any sense to me.

It does that crashreporter thing for a few thousand lines, then it moves on to crashlog. I'm looking for the configuration file that's calling "/Library/PocketMac" because that file does not exist. At least I can still get to my stuff.

    Any idea what this means?

    /private/etc/ttys: console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/loginwindow -LoginHook /Library/PocketMac/PocketMac -LogoutHook /Library/PocketMac/kkill" vt100 on secure window=/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"

I haven't got a clue, but I'm headed off to see what I can find.

Ok, commenting out that whole line wasn't a good idea. Can someone tell me what that line looks like in their /etc/ttys file?
  • Reply 5 of 7
    HAHAHA!!! Victory is mine!

I uncommented that line in /etc/ttys and then took out all that PocketMac crap. It was really my own fault for not being more careful deleting stuff from my system folder... tsk tsk. I should know better. But now I've got a perl script that will search for things within any text file on my hard drive and it does it quickly.

THANK GOD FOR PERL AND GREP.

Thanks for looking Brad and Kickaha (and others).

    console "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow" vt100 on secure window=/System/Library/CoreServices/WindowServer onoption="/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"

    :/

Okay, it looks to me like...

#1: It's Thread 2 that's crashing, period. It's attempting a method invocation message forwarding to an object that is totally fubared.

#2: Your fs_usage log looks like it's attempting to do timezone stuff... perhaps an NTP check initiation?

#3: PocketMac is a PocketPC syncing app...

1 + 2 + 3 = you had PocketMac installed, it performs a sync check at the same time loginwindow is coming up (why? *NO* idea), which asks for a time check, but the NotificationManager had no valid object to send it to because you removed the .nib files, but not the hooks at the loginwindow level.

    Sound good?

    Edit: Oh, nevermind.

#3: That ttys line looks WAY wrong, is my gut feeling. Ever mucked with that file before?

I didn't mess with the file, but I messed with PocketMac v2.0 (don't touch that program even if you're paid to). I figured everything between loginhook and logouthook, inclusive, was due to pocketmac, so I took it out and now everything is working again.
