Indexing, whats the point?

Indexing my hard drive. Why should I do it? How much space does an idex take up? How often should I do it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Indexing is for the find by content aspect of Finder search. The Mac OS help can give you more details.

The only part of my drive I index is my "iChats" folder. I log all of my iChats, and by indexing them, I can use the 'find' function to search for things that were said in those conversations. It's worked great.

I'm not really sure how much space they take up, but I remember back in OS 8.5/9 if you indexed the whole drive it could easily go beyond 100MB.
