Since when do Macs not ship with appleworks? I also don't have that other text program, text edit? I am very disappointed with this!!! Basically after your office trial runs out, you have to buy one of those two programs!!! I am angry!!!!!

TextEdit should be included. Look again.

If its not there, reinstall off the CD.

Or, look around the ADC and make your own.

A new 15" Powerbook. I found text edit. Still no Appleworks. You say it is supposed to be there?

No. AppleWorks comes with "consumer" notebooks, not the "professional" models. They assume you'll pony up for Office.

    Rather dumb, I agree.

TextEdit with WordService and AntiWordService works pretty well for basic purposes, though. Check 'em out at http://www.macupdate.com.

Nope, it's definitely not supposed to be there. IIRC, Appleworks only comes pre-installed on the iBook and iMac. I think it's been that way for quite a while.

Well, when that trial runs out, I'd recommend not buying Appleworks.

Appleworks rules the planet. The education version is about $40. Buy it now!

    AppleWorks makes me physically ill.

I wouldn't use it unless you paid me.

It could do with some updating but it is great for 99% of all people.

If I needed to write a spreadsheet that would get information for a form from a database and fill in the values, well that might not work in Appleworks. But for the rest of the planet, it kicks butt.

Likewise if you are a student, you save $110 by buying Appleworks. If you have to actually buy the standard edition, the savings is $300. That is enough for a ton of ram and a Superdrive.

TextEdit takes advantage of (Jaguar) font panels to offer features like auto-ligature on the fly

(previously reserved for $$$ prepress design tools like Quark/InDesign)

switch font to zapfino and bump up the size to 30

start typing... letters will reflow and blend seamlessly

beats the stink out of *cough* Notepad *cough* and competing "free" text editors

Fontbook in Panther should improve things even further.

or there's always an option to use Terminal... Vi or Pine are installed by default, right?
