iMac combo drive retrofit...possibility?
Okay, now that we know that someone has come up with a slot-loading DVD/CD-R drive (the new Titanium PowerBooks announced on Monday), what do you think the chances are of some other company (or even the one making the drive for the PowerBook) coming out with a combo drive model that can be put into the iMacs?
I mean, we all know that the new, upcoming iMac will probably feature a combo drive, at least as a BTO. But what about those of us with current slot-loading iMacs.
I've got a first-generation iMac DV and would love to outfit it with a DVD/CD-R combo drive that maintained the slot-loading coolness it currently has.
Any thoughts on this? Why or why not it could/should be done? There are tons of people out there with slot-loading iMacs, some older, some newer (Snow, Flower Power, etc.) who have either a DVD or a CD-R, but would love to have both.
If they've figured out a way to get it into the tight, shallow space of a TiBook, surely someone can adapt it for the current iMac enclosure, right? I think someone could be sitting on a bit of a goldmine.
Not everyone is going to rush out and buy a new LCD iMac with a combo drive. Tons will, of course (like me), but many people are completely satisfied with their CRT-based iMac and would probably pay $200-300 for the chance to have an all-in-one drive in their favorite all-in-one computer.
Just makes sense. The current CRT iMacs aren't suddenly going to fall off the face of the earth come next month, you know? Still gonna be THOUSANDS of them out there, still getting the job done and their usefulness and coolness would only be made more so by a DVD/CD-R combo drive option.

Well you asked for it
This would be for individuals who either aren't concerned with drive replacements, warranty-voiding or whatever (perhaps their warranty has expired anyway?).
And some people aren't as much into the speed-freak burning thing as simply having a nice, clean all-in-one unit inside their slot-loading iMac.
Yes, if you're a hardcore "power user" (God, I hate that word...), then you ARE going to probably buy the latest 24x or faster Firewire drive.
But plenty of consumers, iTunes burners, low-level users and hobbyist might like the idea of having it all in there as one unit.
I would. Believe me, if I could take my tangerine DV iMac into a local Mac specialist shop and have a DVD/CD-R drive dropped in for a few hundred bucks, I'd be there this afternoon!
But I'm a neat freak who hates a bunch of crap all over his desk, so...
