External Microphone; iMac Need Amplifier?

I'm trying to connect an external microphone (for musical recording) to my iMac, and while it does receive a signal, it is weak (never registering above 3 bars in the mic settings). I presume I need to amplify the signal rather than pluggin directly into the line-in audio of the iMac.

What's the best solution for this? Will the iMic do this? I've tested the scenario on a PB 12" to be sure the problem wasn't with my Mac, and I got the same result...Clearly power/amplification is required, but I'd like a SMALL solution.

Are you sure you just didn't have the input volume up high enough? Is it a USB mic, or a regular line in mic? If it is line in, it should not require an external amp unless it is a condenser mic, which I doubt it is. If it is USB, it may require an external power source. Try messing with the input settings in system prefs. Hope this helps.
