Questions and concerns about the new iMac

1) Is the iMac video upgradeable? (I assume not, but I wasn't aware of any integrated Nvidia GeForce solutions)



2) Will there ever be a choice of monitor? (Would a 17" monitor be too heavy?)



3) Does the screen rotate to portrait? (Seems not)



4) What is the height of the HD bay? How hard will it be to replace (HD replacement possibilities)?



5) Is the proc on a daughtercard, or on the main board (future upgrade possibilities)?



6) Is the outer shell of the unit white, or is it white painted on the inside of a clear shell, or is there a clear shell over an inner white shell (mod possibilites)?



Please feel free to add, or answer as possible.

    I've always wished that Apple would make the shells easily detachable so that third parties could provide their own mods. Can you imagine a wood or leather iMac casing? Or a rainbow color scheme? Or a chrome iMac? The possibilities to express yourself this way are exciting.



    Sorry I didn't really answer any of your questions - I just wanted to comment on your point six.





    p.s. please don't flame me regarding the engineering obstacles of the above suggestions. I have no idea if an airport will work in chrome iMac or if a wood shell could catch fire. I'll leave the engineering to the pro's.

    7) Since the power source is inside the beautiful new dome (rather than in an exterior brick), and a hotter G4 has replaced the G3, does that mean that the new iMac has a fan?

    It does have a fan, but Jobs says its a quiet one. I definitely want it in black-white sucks...................

    I'm a little disappointed that it uses the more expensive and less ubiquious SO-DIMMs again for memory.



    I would bet money that the cpu and video are not upgradeable. The iMac isn't designed to upgrade components, Steve said he envisions a world of all in one simple computers.

    You know, I wish they'd put one of the USB ports by the media drive, so you could connect the keyboard without running the cord around the base. It just seems awkward to me to do that. But it is a small issue.

    Get this: only one of the RAM is SODIMM. The other is DIMM, and guess what: you can't change it (the DIMM) yourself.

    Regarding upgrading the graphics, Apple's site says this:



    "NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics processor with AGP 2X support."



    Does the AGP 2X support entail that the video card actually is upgradable?



    And btw, you aren't supposed to be able to upgrade the lower slot on the original iMac, but I did it anyway. It's probably just more of an involved process.

    I cant wait till people start terring this thing apart to look at its guts, and possible expansion possibilities.

    And can you imagine all of the cool mods that could be done to this bad boy?

    No, it's just refers to the bus speed between the main system bus and the integrated Video accelerator.



    As for the memory, you're probably right, but I would let someone else try it first and post the photos of their experience before I tried it, the whole "Asps, very dangerous, you go first!" kind of thing.

    The idea has been posted elsewhere, by others, but it is something I had thought of as well, and I will mention it here in response to the above: The monitor rotates 360° You could easily turn the base sideways so that all of your ports were on one side and the optical drive was on the other. I imagine it would work out pretty well...

    Don't think so. As Jobs said they thought of a drive/sideways design but that would slow (or slower drive) the drive down. It is designed the way it is...vertical.



    Also, most people (including myself) have the USB keyboard cord going behind and under the desk. Many desks with keyboard trays have a cord hole in the back or either a hole behind on the desk...problem solved for most people.



    As far as turning it and getting a portrait mode...not yet. But maybe some third party might hack something...be cool too.



    Extra monitor? Attach another to the VGA port.



    This is basically what you get people, you can add an Airport card or extra RAM...deal with it. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
