For speed, always look for a FireWire drive with the technology "Oxford 911". it is the name of the bridge between the IDE input and the FireWire output (there is no yet any "native" FireWire drive on the market). Others bridges suck.
IMHO the best FW desktop HD would be the ICE FireWire enclosure with the Western Digital 80 GB IDE 7200 rpm in it. (< $320)
The EZquest Cobra+ 80 GB 7200rpm is fast and cool, a little more expensive though (
Don't buy the Maxtor's FireWire HD because they are only 5400 rpm.
Thanks guys - I'll check them out for my desktop..... also thinking about a portable drive too - VST any good - i note that their speeds are quite slow..... like the slim Cobras listed above.....less than 7200. What is the reall draw back here (besides the obvious transfer times - does it stop you from doing video editing etc ?
Pay attention, there are two Cobras : the little, portable, 2.5" 5400 rpm CobraSlim (max 48 GB, the others are 4200 rpm) ; and the bigger, 3.5" 7200 rpm Cobra+ (up to 100 GB).
A little FW HD is very cool indeed, but if you want to do digital video editing, take a bigger desktop-based 7200 rpm Firewire HD (like the Cobra+). Moreover they are cheaper than the slim HDs.
Take an ICE FireWire enclosure and put a decent IDE disk in, you're set! The ICE has the Oxford chip in and is lightweight but sturdy. And it is a much better bargain than buying the combination from a vendor.
Those ICE enclosures are pretty sweet. Wish I coulda done that...
I have a 20GB LaCie Pocketdrive. I'm actually very happy with it, so far so good. I know I paid a pretty price for its size, but it works very well for me.
macnn had a link to a FW enclosure that holds two drives in it, allowing for an FW RAID 0.

Its an IBM Deskstar 75GXP (though some people have had problems with this) and is fairly fast, though my peak was 10mb/sec copying from the drive to my PBs internal harddrive. Probably limited by the PB HD.
I was looking at those cobras and their cool but 6 pounds!. Anybody know of a drive thats fast and decently portable, cuz most of the portable ones i've seen are like 4500 rpm. I dont need it to fit in my shirt pocket just in my laptop bag and not be just as heavy as my computer. I'm looking for a 30, 40, or 60gig.
