problem installing panther

I am trying to install panther on my imac. I have a 60 gb hd with 21 gb available. The panther installer says I need an additional 1.3 gb of space to install. I went ahead and continued and the installer began checking the "target volume consistency" then an error message came up saying there was an error with the installation and to try again. I did a customized and removed languages to decrease the amount of space to install but it only removed about 400 mb of space. Where is this space the installer thinks it needs. I would really rather not do a clean install and would like to just upgrade the jaguar currently running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have your drive partitioned? If so, panther needs to be on the first 8GB of the first partition. I know that panther does not need 22gb of space to install, that's crazy. I don't know what else to tell you.
