Trouble Installing Updates

The other day the software updater came up and said there were ipod and airport updates, so I decided to install them. After it downloaded the updates it tried to start installing them, but paused and says (Waiting for locals disks...). It seemed to freeze up then. None of the menues or buttons work. I had to force quit to get it to stop.

So, I thought maybe it was the software update program that was having a problem, so I went to apple.com and downloaded the updates manually. I tried to install them that way, but it froze up when I got to the read me. Again, I had to force quit.

So, I thought maybe something was wrong with my hard disk. So I ran Disk Utility program, but it got stuck on the "Gathering Disk Information".

Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? Is there are quick fix to this, or will I have to reformat. Luckily I have been using Backup to save all my files to an external drive, so reinstalling everything won't be a huge deal, but I would like to avoid it if possible.

Thanks for your help.

i'd boot of the install CD and run a permissions fix.

or just read the FAQ above and do the permissions fix in single user mode.

    both should work just fine.

Unplug any external drives (sure they're powered? I had that happen...)
