Another use for an iPod
So I just put my Cube to sleep before putting myself to sleep, and it went into that awful unsleep where the display goes black but the system still runs - and your only recourse is a hard reset.
Except that I had my iPod docked. So on a lark, I pulled it off the dock and put it back on. And the Cube finished going to sleep just as nice as you please.
I can't say why this worked, but I was so grateful that I woke it back up to post here, just in case anyone else finds it useful. Maybe we can generalize a way to coax a unsleeping Mac into slumberland?
