Buying advice external f/w Hard Drive

Hi all,

I am looking to buy an external firewire HD for my 15" Flat panel iMac. I would like the drive to be around 160G in size, draw power from the f/w cable, and have a f/w port on it for daisy chaining.

Any advice out there for a UK user?

Cheers,

David

I think that by far the most beneficial way (to your monetary funds) would be to purchase something like this puppy (a firewire enclosure), and then wait for an immortally kind soul like piwozniak to send you a 2.5" hard drive to go along with it.

If not that: I wonder if you'll find a drives that large that are bus powered. Because: drives that large are still only 3.5" honkers, and mostly @ 7200 rpm, which are entirely to thirsty to be left only to nurse from the fire-biligal cord.

In general, for all external hard-driving needs, I recommend LaCie.

The only full-size bus powered FW drive I know of is this one from wiebetech. If you ever plan to use this on a notebook you might want to get a 5400RPM drive. Otherwise, the 7200RPMs should work just fine on your iMac.
