iBook harddrive died - how to replace?

Hi all!

My iBooks harddrive just died with a loud and very noticable grinding sound - RIP.

It looks like Apple will not be going to exchange it and since warrenty is void anyways I think I will replace it myself.

But how exactly do you do this? Are there any "official" Apple tech documents? I saw an instruction a while back on the net but googeling for it does not help - seems to be gone.

I hope you can help me out!

if it is a clam shell, it can be a task, the ibook thin model is more modular.

clam shell: not modular...well modular if you would call something modular by gluing it all together so you can't get to anything.

that's what i remembe from a bad experience a couple years back...it wasn't a 'fun' task. although i could of been in a not to good mood.

What model of iBook do you have? If it's the older ones (Blue/orange/graphite) than replacing the HD without screwing anything up will take the assistance of God Himself. No small task. I wouldn't recommend going about this on your own. However, if you do, make sure you document each step and keep a close watch on everything you take out of your computer.

The reason there are no apple support docs. on it is because a HD is not considered a user installable part due to the difficulty of the task.
