What's in TheVolumeSettingsFolder?

It's one of these ubiquitous hidden files/directories type things. Mostly (only, in fact) at the root of a hard drive (be it internal or external). Does anybody know what they are for? Logically thinking, I may deduct that it says something about the settings of a particular volume. Such as?

    It is (was) for OS 9. I forget what exactly it remembered, but if you're using OS X it can be deleted without consequences.
