    Why would they be unreliable?

Good luck with the seagate pfflam. I had a seagate from the factory in my Sony Vaio PC and the HD lasted not even 8 months without a major breakdown (crash)

Lost it all as I was unwise to back things up.

Needless to say I will never purchase another seagate.

I hope it was a fluke. All manufacturers have some percentage of lemons.

    I am not a mod.

Does anyone know why the big HDs would be unreliable?

They aren't, usually, just certain brands tend to be a little more flakey than others. for everyday use, maxtor drive are not to bad, though i'd probably look to something else in a work environment.

Interesting considering all the Maxtor drives I've seen in PowerMacs.

My Maxtor has survived WAY more abuse than it should have. Whereas my IBM Deathstar lost me $379 and 45 gigs of data. Just to spite them I'm NEVER buying and IBM hard drive again.

i seem to recall an issue with one or more of the IBM drives some time back that could result in data loss. i think this was fixed in later drives but i understand where your coming from. I too have had pretty good luck with maxtor, but everything i read says they are not the most reliable things on the market. xlr8yourmac.com has great reviews on all things hardware related. an invaluable resource for anyone looking to buy.

IIRC, they sold their HD facilities to Toshiba after the deathstar debacle.

i remember reading a review a while back that found among the massive HD's, Maxtors were actually had the lowest return/defect rate.
