Dilema

I have a dilema. I am about to buy my fist mac. and my first portable computer. I have decided to kill two birds with the same stone.

First I am assuming their is not going to be any upgrade to TiBooks at tokyo. (and this is not the place to discuss this, I know )

So My delema is. Can the Ibook handle OSX? I will probablly turn off all the fancy menu fades and window warps etc. prety quicklly (assuming I can). What I'm interested in is basic handling in things like DVD playing, maybe some basic 3d (blender) / 2d (gimp, assuming it runs under osx) graphics work, web design and some dtp, and mp3 ripping (assuming I get an ipod).

I know the TiBook would be better at all of these. But I have the choice of a TiBook, or a 600 IBook with extra battery and IPod.

You see my dilema?

If any one can, how is a ibook or a tibook likelly to compare to a winme on a 800 athalon, 256SDRAM (my current pc). As I have never owned a mac all the comapisons between os9 and osx mean little to me .

Before anyone asks why Im willing to spend this much money on a mac when I dont have much experience with them, 4.9999999999 (damn intel) reasons:

1> Macs look so much better

2> I am really getting sick of windows

3> I can allways put linux on it

4> As that guy on CNET said, I should stop going "ooh shinny" and actually buy one.

5> Its unix based, I understand unix.

The iBook 600 handles OSX just fine!! My advice would be to get one, and buy a 512 MB ram chip. OSX likes lots of RAM. I recently had the same "tibook or ibook" debate, and found that I really preffered the ibook form factor. It is smaller, more rugged, lighter, and I feel, better built. I have the 600 DVD with the RAM maxed at 640mb. I do not even have OS9 installed (classic). The DVD player works like a dream, I also run Golive, illustrator, and lots of other graphics appz. I really feel the the 500 ibook was not u p to the challenge of OSX, but the 600, with the faster system bus, is. I feel that the ibook is the perfect "digital hub" I have an iPod, nicon coolpix, and handsoring, and the ibook makes all these devices make sense. I would only advocate the tibook, for video. If you are heavy into DV editing, then the ti is the way to go. All those people who say that the ibook is great for internet/word/e-mail are full of it. I do sooo much more on mine. As for the PC comparison, it is really hard. In my day job, I am a windows systems engineer, so I have experience in this arena. PERCEPTUALLY, pc's are faster. This means that appz like word, web browsers, and so on, SEEM to launch faster. This has always been the case accross all mac Os's. If you are a guy that cares whether word lunches in .7 as opposed to .9 seconds, stick with the PC. The mac just offers a more intuative, and consistent way to get things done. These days that ease of use is combined with some serious power under the OS hood!! My little $1000 ibook, runs apache web server, and a full implimentation of BSD UNIX. To put it another way, this is not your fathers mac!! It has been the dream of linux geeks everywhere to put a useable front end (KDE?? GNOME?? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> ) on a scaleable unix system for years. I cannot help but see the irony that it should be Apple that finally suceed. Anyway, buy the ibook, forget about cross platfor comparisons, get some cool appz, and enjoy!!!! Robin.
