G5 derivative in Xbox 2?

Original story here, by way of Slashdot.

I'm a bystander in the console wars, not owning one, but I do try to follow the industry.

That Microsoft may be engineering the Xbox 2 with lower cost in mind is interesting, considering that the original system's high performance relative to its competitors was a major selling point, high price be damned. Nice to see more faith in IBM's PPC potential, though.

Any word on hard drive reliability in the original Xbox? If it could be replaced with a large amount of flash memory, I might not miss its absence. Built-in storage, especially combined with Xbox Live, opens up a ton of possibilities for developers, and I'd hate to see it go altogether.

The thought of MS doing Xbox 2 development on G5s is just cool.
