iPhoto Keeps Crashing

in Genius Bar edited January 2014
Hi all,

I've recently upgraded to iPhoto 4, (under 10.2.8) and now I have nothing but problems. After every edit/undo iPhoto crashes. Then there are random crashes while I browse the library. There doesn't seem to be a link between the photos that cause it.

I've repaired disk permissions and turned sharing off.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Pavid

PS where in iPhoto do I point to the library used on the HD?

Quit iPhoto, trash the following file, then relaunch iPhoto:

    Macintosh HD > Users > [Username] > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto.plist

You might also want to try trashing your caches. Delete everything in Home/library/caches. EVERYTHING in there should be thrown away and deleted.

OK, seems to have done the trick, thanks.

Just waht are these plist files, and how comes I can delete them safely?

    Cheers,

.plist stands for Property List. It's an XML file that describes preferences under MacOS X. Preference files are organized like Java packages:

    com.apple.iPhoto.plist:

    com: A commercial application

apple: The company that made it

iPhoto: The name of the application

    plist: It's a preferences file

Basically nothing in there is critical for the operation of your application, but you may need to reset some of your preferences afterwards. If you're a l33t hacker d00d, you can actually inspect the .plist file and frequently edit out just the corrupted part(s), leaving most of the preferences intact, but it's safer to just toss it completely.
