I can't imagine that there's a lot of confusion here. They're the devices where USB is the input, and it has some sort of tasty DAC inside it, so analog is the output. As advertising would suggest, the analog (or perhaps digital) electronics inside make good sound.

I was interested in them, but i've had such a horrible time with USB audio input in OS X that i think any external sound processing device i buy from now on will be FireWire.
