USB flash memory stick problem

I have been given a 16Mb USB flash memory stick which I cannot seem to use and I think the problem may be that I cannot format the thing for my Mac.

To explain...

When I insert the device into USB port a message appears stating that "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click ignore"

Ehen I click initialize I get Disk utility up on screen showing the memory as a disk 15.63 MB in size with another disk below as "Untitled 1"

"Untitled 1" shows as "Unmounted" and Format is "DOS_FAT_12"

I've tried erasing, Verifing and Repairing but to no avail.

Is this memory only useable on a Windows machine or can I get the thing to work with my Mac?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It should probably work. Only thing I can think of is to see if there's some sort of little switch that locks the drive, if there is one and it's in a locked position, then it won't show up.

Yes, there is a switch, set to the "unlock" position but still no joy.

Maybe the memory has a DOS driver installed that I cannot erase?

Maybe I should try to initialise it on a PC?
