old TiBooks - How far back to go?

Ok, I'm narrowing in on getting an old TiBook for my re-entry into the Maccanalian world.

The only thing on the horizon is the impending Quartz EXTREME (every time I hear that word, I can practically hear the ALLCAPS): How far back can I go and still get some QE goodness? How about OS X in gneral? What TiBooks does it run sluggishly on?

Finally, where can a man get an old TiBook? (First person to say 'eBay' is rotten dodo egg. )

EDIT: Oh, yeah. I'll be using basic word processing, email, etc with occassional dabbling in FCP3 perhaps. If all goes well, I'll trade up to a current TiBook in the future.....

Thanks in advance.

I'm an early adoptin' Ti Book type with a 400Mhz, no-extra-RAM machine. It runs OS X absolutely fine, although obviously Quartz EXTREME isn't going to happen (to which grr). With some more RAM it'd positively zip.

The major issue I have with it is that, like that of my iPod, the battery is now entirely rubbish, giving me a mammoth hour-and-a-half of standalone work. And sometimes I find my machine in a state of permanent sleep when I want to use it in the morning should I forget to plug it in overnight.

(Admittedly I've used it like some kind of slave for the past year and despite all the sore use to which I've put it and all the journeys by plane and bicycle it has had to endure it still looks beautiful, works fine, and is one of my closest chums, so it's not all bad news. Just the freakin' battery, which, unlike that of an iPod, is easily replaceable.)

If you want Quartz Extreme the oldest Ti you can get is the 550 (or original 667).

    check out <a href="http://www.powermax.com/cpus/refurb_pbook.html"; target="_blank">Powermax's Refurbished PowerBook page </a>

    they have them refurbished for $1888.00 <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
