A clean desktop

Since I already have my hard disk (alias) in my dock I don't want to have the HD displayed on the desktop. I was just going to drag it into a folder of my HD and then eject the image on the desktop. Well you get a dialog box saying you need an admin password to do this. Will doing this trash my HD. Does anyone know the proper way I can remove the image from the desktop.

It's a preference in the Finder. You can choose whether connected servers, mounted CDs etc appear as well.
