Can't add a transition to subclips in FCE

Hello.

For some reason I can't add a transitions between two subclips I created. I get the curarrow curser with and x in it.



Does anyone know why????

Is the transition longer in duration than either of the two clips?

Nope. But I just noticed that if I create an In & out point within the subclip and add it to the track then I can put a transition in...
