imac (CRT) internal HD question.

Hello all,

A trivial question for all you Mac hardware wizards. I've got an old G3 366Mhz CRT Imac that is dead. It was my mother's, and while she has a new ibook now there are a few files she'd like to recover. I want to get the hard drive out (by any means neccesary) and get those files. I was hoping someone could give me advice.

Mostly I just need to know how to connect it to something after I remove it.

There are a plethora of old macs around the house that could aid me from a power mac 6500 to a Powermac g4. But if you can think of anything that would be useful please chime in.

Thanks much

The hard drive inside the machine is the same as any other internal hard drive ...

once you get it out, you can plug it into an empty bay in your G4 tower. (or spend $69 for an external case/FW bridge.)

I can't find the site at the moment, but I think it was an old "MacWorld" archive ... that had a photo essay about taking apart these old macs. In any case, If yours is already toast, just start taking out screws !

While you're at it, you could pull the RAM, CD drive, prom, etc and ebay them ... probably make up the cost of an external enclosure for that HD

I'd go with an external Firewire drive, you can pick them up pretty cheap these days.

(I am totally unfamiliar with the either the store or the brand in the second link there, but the price is great, -- maybe doesn't include cable tho?)

Also, here is an illustrated guide to removing the drive.

    Thanks allinone and kingofsomewherehot.

I'm especially grateful for the link All. I should have found that one myself.
